Beauty in Odd Places

I walk into The Art Students League of New York gallery in October and just see all these beautiful pieces of art throughout this room. The exhibit was titled “Art From Anxious Times” and discusses different topics in politics. Some items really aroused thought in my mind and emotions through my body. I am a real visual person so things really stuck in my head.

The first thing I laid my eyes on was a picture by Edward Burtynsky, Oxford Tire Pile #8, (b1995) it was a valley of tires. The shot is set up so beautiful with a downward angle on the hill. It takes your eye down all the way down to the end of the two piles of tires. It also makes you feel like you, yourself are standing on top of the hill looking down it. He simply took something that is just sitting there going into waste and turned it into a beautiful imagery. As an American I can say we are the largest consumers and then just let those things go to complete uselessness. This is just one location of piles of tires that we just let sit there and do nothing with them. It is truly a time where our nation needs to figure out what to do with all the things we consume and put it to an alternative good use.

As I walk a little further down the wall my eyes become glued on the portraits of two young girls. The pictures were taken by photographer Phil Borges. The first picture was of Shelo age 20 and Benda age 17 in 1994. The second photograph Jigme age 8 and Sonma age 18 months in 1994. Both portraits are nicely set up with light and scenery. The Portraits are black and white but with a very soft touch and allot of gray tones in between. In the first picture of Shelo and Benda the white in the picture were real white which lets you get a feel of how cold it really is for them there. The girls are also neatly put together but if you look at their faces and hands you see dirt streaks which could be a sign of working hard. Plus you can tell they don’t have much access to clean themselves or even care for the need to clean them as often. In the second picture of Shelo and Sonam the picture looks a little darker and rougher kind of like there appearance. Their hair is all over the place, plus their clothes and face look dirty. They don’t feel a need for much beauty maybe the only beauty they have is the land that surrounds them which is slowly getting destroyed. In both pictures they have somewhat of a lost look in their eyes. That what they once knew they no longer know now. But no matter how much you know these people are loosening you cannot stop and stare for awhile. There is still so much beauty in their faces through the simple things.

Art is vision that can speak to all and be interpreted in many different ways. I always love listen to peoples many views on how they feel on the art that is in front of them and having discussions. Recently I went to an exhibit with a class I was attending. It was great to really discuss the art with my fellow students and what they felt. The art that was presented was amazing and brought really strong feeling out of my peers because it discusses the many different topics of politics.

Bush = Asshole

So I was on the web searching for pictures on freedom of speech and when I clicked on this image it connected me to a website that had a link on it for little film about the President Bush administration. The short film was made in 2003 during his first term. The film is set with a song called "Asshole" by Jim's Big Ego and starts with imagery from the early 1900's. Through out the song they keep repeating "your an asshole" it is such a simple line and if your not for the Bush administration it is how you most likely feel about him and his administration. It also discuss how the choices the administration made which lead to mistakes they would always blamed it on something else or tried to find something else to cover up there wrong doings.
The small flick was simple but cool and really delivered a simple message and as well gives you a little chuckle at some points. So check it out: http://filmstripinternational.com/

I myself have never been the one for Bush Jr. or Bush Senior. I always felt there presidency was to benefit there own personal business and there business friends and partners. They were really never in office to better the nation as a whole but to better a select few. I also believe that Bush Jr. put our nation in this present war for his own personal reasons especially since the people that bombed us where not from Iraq. Prior to all this mess he had connections with these people and I feel business deals went sour and he decided to use the nation to get what he wanted and did not care on who got hurt on the way. This war has also made the nation loose billions of dollars and I do not see any changes. We are now presently in an economic crisis and the choices he is making are not making us any better but worse. So I am happy to say that Bush and his administration will be gone. Our next President Obama is making some pretty smart choices and looks like he wants to do good things but we will have to see when he gets in office.
